Q & A with Lisa Gardner: Right Behind You Blog Tour

I have a big treat for all my lovely readers today! To celebrate the release of Right Behind You, I have an exclusive interview with the author Lisa Gardner to share with you all. It was an honour to be included in this blog tour and I’d like to thank both Lisa and Headline Books for allowing me to take part.

Q & A with Lisa Gardner

Hi Lisa! First of all thank you for featuring on Amy’s Bookish Life. How excited are you for the release of Right Behind You?
Excited and nervous!  Publishing a novel always feels like sending my beloved child out into the cold cruel world.  I have to have faith it’s strong enough.  Fortunately, initial reviews have been good for RIGHT BEHIND YOU so I can almost breathe.   Almost.
Would you care to tell us a bit about Right Behind You?
Former FBI profilers Quincy and Rainie are ready to downsize their careers with the long-awaited adoption of their thirteen year old foster daughter, Sharlah.  So of course they’re called to the scene of a shooting, where the lead suspect turns out be Sharlah’s estranged older brother Telly.  When Telly opens fire on the fugitive tracking team, Quincy and Rainie must race the clock to figure out what has driven Telly to such violence and how to save their family.
What were your main inspirations behind the book?
I’d just read an article on fugitive tracking and found it mesmerizing.  It’s such dangerous work, particularly in high stress situations where the escaped felon, shooter, etc., has no intention of being taken alive.  It was fascinating to learn the techniques involved and the enduring value of the skill, even in this day and age of infra-red technology.
Did you have to overcome any obstacles whilst planning and writing?
There are always surprises along the way.  I started out thinking it was a book on spree shooters and the need for old fashion tracking techniques.  But it quickly became a book about family.  Sharlah and Telly’s relationship when they were young.  What happened one terrible night to rip them apart.  Their on-going need to find each other again, even though both of them are afraid.
What did you enjoy most about writing this novel?
Molly!  In my real life, I work with my local animal shelter.  Last year we got in an amazing pit bull mix, Molly.  She was discovered severely neglected and heavily pregnant.  Though malnourished herself, she gave birth to a huge litter of puppies and tended them all faithfully.  She became an inspiration to us all, so of course I made her the fierce tracking dog in Right Behind You.  It was great to honor a real hero.
You write Crime Fiction. Do you think you would ever branch out into another genre?
No.  I love puzzles, not to mention having an excuse to interview law enforcement officers about crime and criminology.  Thriller novels it is.
When you aren’t writing, what do you like to do? Any interesting hobbies?
I live in the beautiful mountains of New Hampshire and I love to hike (or snow shoe this time of year).  It’s how I work out most of my plotting ideas.
Lastly, what advice would you give for wannabe/amateur writers who are longing to be get their stories out into the world?
Read, read, read.  Write.  Read some more.  You will never be able to control the publishing process, but if you focus on great writing, then publishing should naturally follow.

Is he a hero?

Eight years ago, Sharlah May Nash’s older brother beat their drunken father to death with a baseball bat in order to save both of their lives. Now thirteen years old, Sharlah has finally moved on. About to be adopted by retired FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his partner, Rainie Conner, Sharlah loves one thing best about her new family: They are all experts on monsters.

Is he a killer?

Then the call comes in. A double murder at a local gas station, followed by reports of an armed suspect shooting his way through the wilds of Oregon. As Quincy and Rainie race to assist, they are forced to confront mounting evidence: The shooter may very well be Sharlah’s older brother, Telly Ray Nash, and it appears his killing spree has only just begun.

All she knows for sure: He’s back.

As the clock winds down on a massive hunt for Telly, Quincy and Rainie must answer two critical questions: Why after eight years has this young man started killing again? And what does this mean for Sharlah? Once upon a time, Sharlah’s big brother saved her life. Now, she has two questions of her own: Is her brother a hero or a killer? And how much will it cost her new family before they learn the final, shattering truth? Because as Sharlah knows all too well, the biggest danger is the one standing right behind you.
