I am currently reading It Only Happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne.

I wasn’t expecting candles.
They lit the whole cinema – tea lights, the stout white candles you get in churches, thin ones stuffed into candlesticks. My skin itched in their heat.

As this is a book with an underlying theme of films you certainly expected something along those lines to be mentioned in the opening, and that’s what happened. The bit about candles makes me think that this is going to be quite a cheesy romantic read..but hey some people like that!

“My lawyer says he’s got a good shot at making us sell. With you only a year away from uni…your dad’s saying we don’t need all this space anymore. But it’s your home, isn’t it? You’ve got to tell him, it’s more than space, it’s your home. It’s our…our home.”
That’s when the comedown hit. She bent over the table, smashing her head down, getting soy sauce in her hair.

I’m not really sure what to think of this book at the moment. I’m finding it to be quite cliche and very predictable. I’m also finding it hard to gel with any of the characters. Hopefully it’ll get better as I read on…fingers crossed.

  1. I can see how this would be cliché just based on premise but I don't mind cliché if it's executed well. Hopefully this will click with you soon and it will be a fun read.
