My Recent Reads #1

Today I am starting a new series on my blog. This was inspired by my lovely friends Emily at A Short Book Lover and Eleanor at Cosy Book Corner, so do go and check their posts out!

Recently, I have gotten a bit overwhelmed when trying to write my monthly wrap up, so, I’ve decided to start doing ‘Recent Reads’ where I share my thoughts on books I have recently read in smaller chunks. I am hoping to make this a fortnightly thing on my blog every Wednesday.

Again, Again by E. Lockhart

This was my first foray into the work of E. Lockhart and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. Again, Again was a unique twist on the YA Contemporary Romance genre and I found myself immersed in it. The idea of alternate universes was one that got me thinking and one that I’d never thought about, until I read the book. Overall it was a beautifully written, read that leaves you wanting more. Love On The Main Stage by S.A. Domingo

Love On The Main Stage was a summer read that will leave you feeling all warm inside. The romance side was rather cute and I really enjoyed seeing Sam bring Nova out of her shell. Musically, it was fabulous and it had me longing to go to a gig again. Also, the diversity was next to none! Seeing Nova’s Caribbean Roots come alive through her parents love of cooking was excellent, and made me hungry. If you want a cute summery read full of romance, friendship, diversity and music then this is for you. Full review here.

Cinderella is Dead by Kalynn Baron

How do I even begin to describe my love for this book!? It was INCREDIBLE! I love a good fairytale retelling and if I’m being honest this is probably the best one I’ve read in a long time. It had diversity, it had action, it had a gripping plot, it had fantastic world-building and I couldn’t get enough of it! I had a big book hangover after reading this, and to be honest I still haven’t recovered. My full review will be coming closer to the release date on 6th August.

Not So Pure and Simple by Lamar Giles

Not So Pure and Simple was a book that really gets you thinking about topics such as toxic masculinity, sex, male entitlement and religion in a way that isn’t done enough in YA. So, for that part I commend it. However, I found the main character Del to be unlikeable and I just couldn’t warm up to him. He was selfish and stalker-like in his pursuit of Kiera and never stopped to think about what she wanted. He only saw the error of his ways when his sister got involved. Mind you, if you want a book that tackles certain topics in an important way, then this may be the book for you.
